Leon James Smith Sr

Leon James Smith, Sr. passed from this life on May 23, 2022 at the age of 96. He was born in Dawson County, Georgia to Amily and Velvia Smith on March 26, 1926. He was preceded in death by his wife, Teresa Burroughs Smith, son, Leon James Smith, Jr. and siblings, Lorretta Forrester, Cozetta Wehunt, Thelma Kinney, Claudine Smith, W. A. Smith, Leroy Smith and R.J. Smith. Leon, also known as Daddy, Papa and friend, lived in the Eatonton/Greensboro area for the last 36 years. He graduated from Dawson County High School and attended Marsh Business College in Atlanta. He married the love of his life, Teresa, on December 25, 1948 and spent the next 62 years with her at his side. His work career involved sales at L.B. Price and various food brokerages, ending his career with his own brokerage, Can-Fec Brokerage. He has been actively involved in Eatonton Presbyterian Church since moving to the Lake Oconee area to retire. Over the years, he could be seen volunteering with Habitat for Humanity and his church. He loved life, woodworking, gardening and people. He was always ready to greet and meet his friends and enjoyed his exercise classes and entertaining his friends at lunch and dinner. He is survived by his daughters, Brenda Bracken (Chris) and Sandra Westcott (Bill), daughter-in-law Becky Appleton, five grandsons who were the apples of his eye, Christopher Bracken (Libby), Stuart Bracken (Lindsey), Ben Westcott (Meghan), Adam Westcott (Laura) and Dan Westcott (Renee), 16 great-grandchildren, cousins and nephews. Funeral services will be at Eatonton Presbyterian Church on June 3rd at 11:00 AM. Visitation will be from 9:00-10:30 AM at the same location.
